Only God Forgives (รับคำท้าจากพระเจ้า)

Nicolas Winding Refn

2013

★★★ out of 5

My friend showed me this magnificently edited trailer (though it doesn’t match the pacing of the film) the other day and I knew I had to see this film. Perhaps I heard so much more of the negative things about this film, that it didn’t bother or bore me as much as I expected it to. I find a good way to describe it is a more fantastical Drive. Not EXACT in the sense of storyline, but with similar character traits and overall feel of the film. It has an incredibly slow pace from what the trailers make it out to look like, so don’t go in thinking it’s going to be as action packed.

There are plenty of reviewers out there explaining the film to their interpretations, but for me it’s a little easier to understand when I read that Refn himself has said that Vithay Pansringarm’s character is ‘God.’ It’s more art house and a film that requires your patience. With the neon-soaked locations, grit, minimal dialogue, and major symbolism, I really enjoyed this film.

2011 was the year I became a self-proclaimed cinephile.

2012 was the year I watched 366 new films that I had never seen before.

2013 was the year I started the 222 movie challenge and began making gifs for my blog.

2014 is the year I keep up my challenges and start tackling more filmographies and "classic films."

Feel free to send me any movie suggestions! I'm always on the lookout for follower favorites.

Each month I change up the profile & sidebar pictures to a favorite film. Since I started making gifs, I thought I could be a bit more creative and add some visual interest month by month.

This month's film is Thirst
