2001: A Space Odyssey

Stanley Kubrick

★★★★ out of 5

The first time I saw this one was at my friend’s college apartment with a bunch of people.  Needless to say, I remembered very little of this upon a re-watch, but I had little interest the first time around.  Sure the first time I was intrigued by the mystery of the narrative, but I couldn’t bear the pace at various points and the trippy travel scene towards the end.

This time around, I kept myself free of distractions and just watched the entire thing without stopping.  Because of this, it was much easier to immerse myself into the visual importance of everything.  Now I’m not going to say that I completely understand everything about this one (there are plenty of film scholars and critics out there who would be happy to help you), but between the essays, pages, and thinking it through for myself, it’s interesting to see what you come up with.  Beautiful cinematography, with seamless visual effects and a unique narrative, it’s no wonder this film is held in such high regard in the film world.

2011 was the year I became a self-proclaimed cinephile.

2012 was the year I watched 366 new films that I had never seen before.

2013 was the year I started the 222 movie challenge and began making gifs for my blog.

2014 is the year I created the 210 film challenge as a way to keep up a steady pace with film exploration.

Feel free to send me any movie suggestions! I'm always on the lookout for follower favorites.

Each month I change up the profile & sidebar pictures to a favorite film. Since I started making gifs, I thought I could be a bit more creative and add some visual interest month by month.

This month's film is Rush
